“I just wanted to take a moment to say a big, heartfelt thank you for letting us host the carers week fair at The Holy Sepulchre Church! Your presence and the effort you put into to making this happen made a world of difference. The fair was wonderful, and it wouldn't have been the same without you. Your dedication in raising awareness about caregiving and supporting carers in our community was truly inspiring. We can't thank you enough for being a part of this incredible event and for making it such a success.”

In 2021 the Parochial Church Council (PCC, registered charity 1159833) of St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, also known as Holy Sepulchre, embarked on a new and exciting journey. Led by the Reverend Nick Mottershead FCA BSc BA (“Fr Nick”), the PCC has refocused its vision. Taking the rich musical and military heritage of Holy Sepulchre as inspiration to further its contribution to the Common Good, operations are gradually up-scaling. From our Grade I listed church on Holborn Viaduct, we have been working to reestablish relationships, bringing local partners together to support and enrich the lives of people in all seasons of life, young and old, well and unwell, homed and homeless. We are now open more regularly, offering weekly services, concerts, exhibitions, visitor content, spaces for hire, and ‘warm spaces’. To sustain ourselves, we are trialling a range of social outreach and income generating activities, which meet our music and social welfare goals, and target specific audiences, including: city workers; the homeless; dementia sufferers, SEND young people and carers; early career musicians; schools and Old Bailey witnesses’ and victims’ families. We are now seeking to continue and expand these activities. Fr Nick leads on the delivery of the PCC’s mission and vision, is supported by a curate and 3 PCC members2 females and 1 male although additional members are now being sought. Two additional committees reflect the interests of the Royal Fusiliers Chapel and the Musicians’ Memorial Chapel, with both committee Chairs joining the PCC meetings as observers. 2.5 FTE members of staff support activities, including an Operations Manager, Marketing and Team Administrator, Buildings Manager, Director of Music, Organist, Music Administrator and Choir whilst Fr Nick is self-supporting. Undesignated reserves are the equivalent of around 1 month’s running costs; and income is derived from hires, tenant rental, telecoms antennae rent and ad hoc donations. The total hirer and rental income, plus donations is expected by the end of 2023 to generate sufficient income to maintain the building on a day-to-day basis, but not for long-term building repairs; and it will neither sustain nor support the expansion of the trial activities.

(Summer Music in City Churches):

"We were delighted with the way things went yesterday for our Great Fire of London schools project with the Classical Road Show. The staff at the church couldn't have been more helpful, both on the day and in the planning process. Holy Sepulchre is a very special place to perform, and we were so pleased to be able to bring all those children to the National Musicians' Church with a professional orchestra, conductor and soloists."

From one of the schools:

"The children had a brilliant time. The concert was not too short and not too long and they were completely engaged in the story that the songs follow from the start of the fire through the rebuilding of the city. It was great to have the concert in that particular church with its history relating to the Great Fire of London... It was lovely that the children could stay in their seats to eat lunch. Overall, the day was a great success and the children are still singing the songs as they walk around the school!"
